Q: What is the background of your online name…Heffmike?

H: So, so boring. My original AOL screenname from college. I wasn’t swift enough to come up with something Net-approved, like pwnedUagain or VaLueCaLL420 or Gobboboy. As a result, I’m stupidly easy to find online, compared to most other bloggers’ quest for anonymity, and I’m not so bigtime that I can get a screenname change, so I’m stuck with heffmike. Woot.

Q: How did you get into poker?

H: Yeah, Moneymaker made it look cool. So did Rounders. I’d played home games at school and with co-workers, but they were with nine billion wild cards for a dime at a time. I think it was late 2004 when I had the time and money available to deposit onto Stars, then Full Tilt, and see what the online pokah was all about. I ran really, really good for over two years, then crashed and burned after the UIGEA passed (complete coincidence, honestly) and am rebuilding back up in 2008.

Q: Do you have any poker related goals and if so what are they?

H: Well, I luckboxed into the WSOP ME in 2006 via Full Tilt satellite, so I did that one. It would be nice to take down a live event someday, even one of those quickie $150 daily tourneys the Borgata runs. Basically, my only goal is to just make good decisions every time I play.

Q: What are key improvements that you’ve seen in your game over the last six months, and what is one priority you have for improving? (Submitted by CC)

H: Recent improvements…. Finally realizing that everyone else does NOT play like you do, so factor that in when analyzing their range and what their lines really mean before making your play…. Down the line I’d really like to get better at deep-stack/cash poker – I’m pretty good with a short to medium tournament stack, but need to figure out how to play better with >100BB when you’ve got room for play on the turn and river.

Q: How would you describe your poker style?

H: Grumpy old man TAG in blogger tourneys. Stupidly LAG in cash games, especially live. Either way, I’m really good at shoving into the nutz., lol.

Q: What would be your first piece of advice for someone wanting to learn to play poker? (Submitted by Maudie)

H: Develop a thick skin. While you are learning, you’ll be surprised how many people call you an idiot. Some of them will be right. You’ll know you’re getting better when you can figure out which ones are right…

Q: What level of static do you get over your poker habit? (Submitted by Drewspop)

H: Some on occasion, The wife plays and loves the game, but not as much as I do, so obviously, there are times where she wants me to do X and I’m getting three-outed instead. I try to be a good hubby the rest of the time, and she hasn’t hurt me yet, so I must be balancing things OK.

Q: What was the first poker blog you read?

H: Same ones as everyone else, Iggy and Dr. Pauly. I still visit them a lot, but nowadays Hoy’s blog is usually a good starting point to the rest of the nine circles….. :-)

Q: Who would be at your 6-handed SNG?

H: The only saving grace of playing live is the conversation and personal interaction.
Chatty tables rock.

“deadmoney” Heffmike – who’s that?
Daniel Negreanu – the ultimate talker, plus maybe he’ll let me taste his lunch and see if his mom can really cook or not
Gavin Smith – gotta have comic relief – must be buzzed before we start, though
Phil Hellmuth – comics need a foil, plus someone should yell at me when I screw up, why not him…
Tony “Bond18” Dunst – writes a great analytical blog, will wear a nice suit and look smooth, also chatty and entertaining.
Kenny Tran – need one Crazy Asian Gambooler to keep things lively, I’m only half, so I don’t count.

Q: Between Nihilism and Masochism, which do you think better describes why you play poker? (Submitted by Iakaris)

H: Marxism: I tend to give chips away to each according to their needs.

Q: What’s the last book you have read?

H: The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting: An Oral History by Jim Walsh
I’m a sucker for anything involving Paul, Bob, Tommy and Chris.

Q: Tell us a little known fact about yourself.

H: I was a college radio DJ for over three years. I almost remember how to work a board.

Q: If the poker blogosphere were to have a Canada-USA team competition with a mixed game tournament format, which poker bloggers would you name to each team (5 players per side)? (Submitted by PirateLawyer)

H: Jeez., I gotta do research?

OK, give me five minutes. I apologize for pissing anyone off in advance.
.
U.S. – Hoyazo, Emptyman, Lucko, Cmitch, Cracknaces.
Canada – Fuel55, PirateLawyer, Schaubs, Katitude, Astin
The U.S. team definitely is grumpier, lol

Heffmike’s question for the next champ…

Q: Beer, tallboy can or bottle? Choose and discuss.

  1. Do I need to get up with you about the “Champ profile”?
I hope to make next year’s weekend at Mookie’s. Sounds
like a lot of fun (I can drink like a fish, have a 10 handicap,
and am more addicted to poker than a stripper is to cocaine).
Saw your flopped flush losing to higher flopped flush cooler
hand as I had just been moved to your table. Take care.
JD aka (J)erkoff (D)onkey as so eloquently coined by Bayne…
and further attested to by Hoy and Flail55 (Fuel).
