Weekly Champion Profile – BigSlickNut

Congratulations to BigSlickNut for taking down his first Mookie title…the first time he played. He made a nearly impossible run…down to just 135 chips he came back to win the whole thing. Here is his profile:

Champion: BigSlickNut

Blog: Big Slick Nuts

Q: What is the story behind your ID, BigSlickNut?

BSN: Well, when I first started playing I used the name “Girthboy”. It’s still an active screen name at AP. When I started blogging I wanted something that incorporated poker lingo with a little edge. I fully expected to get some… interesting… traffic, but I really didn’t expect so many gay porn surfers. Anyway, I started using BigSlickNuts, or variations of it, when I started playing in blogger events so people would be able to place me with my blog.

Q: How did you get into poker ?

BSN: I started playing regularly about 12 yrs ago with my brother and his friends, after a divorce, when I had a bit of time on my hands. Lots of wildcard games, and I completely sucked. As far as online poker, I’m part of the Moneymaker boom.

Q: Do you have any poker related goals and if so what are they ?

BSN: I used to think it would be really cool to make a side income from it. Last year, I went on a great rush and was playing at a buy-in level that actually allowed me to pay bills while laid off. I discovered I hated feeling like I “had” to play, though, and really hated the 4-figure swings I’d have in a single night. So, I withdrew the bulk of my bankroll and have only played sporadically during the last 6-8 months. Since then, the only goal I have is similar to many others – I’d like to win an entry to the main event.

Q: Who would be at your 6-handed SNG ?

BSN: Tough one – do I go with entertainment value or EV? For entertainment value, my brother, BuccaneerMike and Mike Matusow. I predict BuccaneerMike could make the Mouth’s head explode. The other 3 would be my wealthy sister-in-law and her husband, who don’t play, and wrap it all up with Shakira for strip-poker potential.

Q: What was the first poker blog you read ?

BSN: AlCan’tHang

Q: What are key improvements that you’ve seen in your game over the last six months, and what is one priority you have for improving? (Submitted by CC)

BSN: I play less, as I said above, and taking it less seriously has actually taken the pressure off and allowed me to make good decisions. When I analyze my play (except for the luck-filled play of last night), I find I’m making better decisions, especially in regard to laying down big hands when I’m beat.

Q: How would you describe your poker style ?

BSN: I mostly play SNGs, so it varies. I mix it up, and mostly play situational poker – what I’ll raise, push, or fold with depends entirely on the situation and very little on the cards.

Q: Who is your favorite poker player ?

BSN: Howard Lederer. He seems like the most well-adjusted player, all the more remarkable considering his sports-betting background.

Q: What’s the last book you have read ?

BSN: I’m currently reading “Man Down: A Broken Wings Thriller” by John Douglas.

Q: What level of static do you get over your poker habit ? (Submitted by Drewspop)

BSN: Mrs. Big just asked 20 minutes ago if I was getting addicted to poker again. Before last night, I hadn’t played in 5 days. So, ALOT!

Q: Between Nihilism and Masochism, which do you think better describes why you play poker? (Submitted by Iakaris)

BSN: Clearly, Masochism. I stayed up half the night playing when I had to get up at 5 a.m. this morning.

Q: Tell us a little known fact about yourself.

BSN: I don’t know, there isn’t much I haven’t shared on my blog. Too much, really.

Q: What would be your first piece of advice for someone wanting to learn to play poker ? (submitted by Maudie)

BSN: Play SNGs. Control your losses this way, because you WILL lose. Watch and think about what the other players are doing and WHY they are doing it. Then, after you bust, read your Harrington. Then go back and apply what you’ve learned. Then move on to cash games and other games.

BSN’s question for next week’s winner…

Q: What’s the frequency, Kenneth ?

Congrats again to BSN and thanks for participating in this profile.
