Weekend at Mookie’s Part II
Saturday morning found us trudging around the house like a bunch of zombies while we got ready to leave for the golf course. Weak doesn’t play golf so he was the lucky, lucky, lucky one who got to sleep in.
My sister drove over to our house and rode out to the course with us. We arrived to find many of the players already there and once again had breakfast at the clubhouse.
After breakfast we headed to the range and began warming up for the tournament. At about that time JJOK pulled into the parking lot. He had finally made it after leaving Houston around 6AM. It was great getting to finally meet him since we have a lot in common…big families, IT work, etc.
I had to do some last minute scrambling when one of the teams dropped out of the tournament late in the week. We ended up with fourteen players which gave us two teams of four and two teams of three. Because of the last minute change the teams weren’t as balanced as I would have liked so we decided not to collect and give out any cash for the winning team.
Pride was on the line along with gift cards to Golfsmith for the winner of the Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests.
Here were the four teams going to war on the golf course…

From left to right…Guppies: Mark, ScottMc, Godfrey, Arnie and Trout: Bubba, Rocky, Carol, Henry

From left to right…Goldfish: Rico, Jim, Steve and Donkeys: JJ, Don, Mookie
Mrs. Mookie and my sister were nice enough to spend the day on the course with us driving around to the various holes snapping pictures, keeping everyone informed of the team scores and ridiculing poor shots.
Check out these PGA Tour quality tee-shots…
Our team was the last to tee off and we came out of the gate a little slow on hole #1 settling for just a par on an easy par 4. We were able to birdie the 2nd hole but then gave it back a couple holes later. It was about that time we asked Mrs. Mookie and company to go find the beer cart.

After another par at hole 5 the beer cart lady showed up and we started throwing back the brew like it was some kind of miracle concoction that would bless us with mad golf skills. It worked because the 6th was the Closest to the Pin hole and none of the previous donkeys had been able to hit the green. Since we were the last group all one of us had to do was land it safely on the green and the gift card would be won.
Unfortunately for me and Don our shots were pushed a little right and missed the green but JJ struck a beautiful shot and landed it safely on the dance floor pin high about 15 feet away.

Throughout the front 9 we received constant updates of the other team’s scores. The team to catch and beat were the Trout. They were -3 through 9 while we closed with back to back birdies on 8 and 9 to get to -2.
At the turn we took a break and scarfed down a hamburger and fries and then headed back to the course and took a disappointing par on #10, an easy par 5. On hole 11 JJ came to the rescue with a brilliant approach shot on the hardest hole on the course which produced a birdie to get us to -3.
The Trout kept the pressure on by getting to -4 early on the back nine while the Guppies made a late push improving to -2. The Goldfish were the victims of the last minute team dropout which caused me to swap players around and faded to +4.

We were able to birdie another hole and got to -4 heading into hole #15, the Longest Drive hole. Once again none of the previous teams were able to find the fairway so all we had to do is hit it straight to claim the prize. I hit one down the middle but not very deep only to have JJ step up to the plate and crush his tee shot. Not only did his ball wave at mine while it soared past, but it also gave mine the finger too. Double prizes for JJ.
Towards the end of the round I was of little help to Don and JJ. They both carried our team to the 18 hole tied at -4 with the Trout. All we had to do was birdie the last hole to claim the win…Par 3, 185 yards.

With the other teams already done with their round and watching from behind the 18th green, I teed my ball up and hit an easy 5 iron and watched my ball sail straight at the pin. I had visions of the ball falling gently on the green and rolling a couple feet away from the pin leaving me the hero with just a tap in for birdie. Unfortunately the ball fell just short of the green and rested in the front fringe.
Don and JJ couldn’t muster up any magic so we were left with my shot. We easily got up and down for par and finished the day tied at -4 with the Trout. The Guppies ended their day -2 while the Goldfish closed at +5.
It was another beautiful day and I think everyone had a great time at the tournament.
Up next, Part III BBQ.
