Vegas Day Five: Slot Magic

I woke up on our final day a little disappointed since I had not come anywhere close to cashing in a tourney and down over $200 at the cash tables. We ate at the Luxor buffet with Rocco and JerseyGirl and then I went for one more session in the poker room while MM headed to the slots. The table was short handed for awhile and as usual I couldn’t get much going. (a true sign of my inner donkey)

About this time I got a phone call from MM (Luxor lets you talk on the phone while at the table) and she calmly told me she had a big hit on a slot machine. There was no crazy excitement like a few days earlier when she hit $180 so I thought she was joking. But this wasn’t a joke, she won $900 on a $1 Wheel of Fortune slot machine. Wow, this was obviously great news and gave me a little pep in my step.

About 30 minutes later MM came up behind my table on the rail with her cell phone and a small slip of paper. The action was on me and I told her to give me a second and looked down at TT. I was in MP and normally would raise here, but decided to just call. The flop was Qh Th Qd, the blinds checked I bet $5 and the button called along with the BB. The turn card was the 7h and the BB bet $20 and I pushed all in for $40 total. They both called and the river was the 2s and the BB went all in and the button called. The button showed Th 4h for the flush while the BB had Q6o and my tens full were good for the main pot. I know what you are asking, why did I only have $50 or so for this hand ? Because this was the one session I didn’t buyin for the full amount…what a dumbass, never again.

Feeling proud of my $150 pot, I turned back to talk with MM and she handed me the phone and my oldest daughter yelled “Mom just won $500 on another slot machine !”. So the story was, after the $900 hit she called home and told everyone and my oldest wanted her to play $20 at a slot machine for her. MM agreed to go in halves with her and gave it a go. She went back to her $1 Wheel of Fortune machine but couldn’t hit so she put the last of their money in a $5 Wheel of Fortune and hit on the second spin – $500.

I always give MM crap about playing slots but because of them we left Vegas up $1,000. You should have see her perk up when Wheel of Fortune came on TV this afternoon. What’s funny is that when I read Jordan’s AC trip report he mentioned his wife loves the same slot machines too.

I ended up the trip down around $65 playing poker. I didn’t expect that I would play nearly 20 hours of cash games and only 3 tournaments. What I found is that I really enjoyed the cash games and want to put in time and get better at them. I took some tough beats against some really bad players, but also discovered that I don’t have all the skills of a successful cash player. There were many times where I probably laid hands down or called that was unwarranted due to my tourney game mentality.

We are ready to get back out to Vegas soon since we had a blast traveling with the whole Austin group and meeting Don and Carmen. Our original plans are to go back in November, but now you never know.
