Ride the Lightning

Thanks to everyone who played last night and to those who signed up but weren’t able to play…sadly those players outlasted me. Once again we weren’t able to reach our goal of 80 players but we did have a great turnout of 61. Al said since Otis played last night, he would give us a week of NSFW pictures even though we didn’t reach the goal…another reason why Otis is the man.

Congrats to dnasty13 for winning the bounty, although how hard is that really ? I give up my chips easier than Paris Hilton gives up the poonany. Next week will be the last week I offer up the Vegas bet bounty since I leave that following Sunday morning to the land of The Don.

Reigning Footy World Champion, Garthmeister, made a valiant comeback last night but found himself on the wrong side of the bubble. Here were the folks who played great and made the final table (picture stolen from the great Cardsquad site)…

The play at the final table was fun to watch since the chipstacks were pretty even. Once lightning36 outraced Joanne’s 99 with AK and got heads up with TexasKaty he held the chiplead. The heads up match was equally enjoyable to watch as they battled back and forth for quite some time. In the end a flopped straight sealed the deal for lightning and he won his 1st Mookie title in his 2nd try. Very impressive. Congrats to those who made the money:

1st Place – lightning36
2nd Place – TexasKaty
3rd Place – Joanne1111
4th Place – SirFWALGMan
5th Place – Astin
6th Place – dnasty13
7th Place – wwonka69

This week was our first go at changing up the 2nd Chance tournament to a Token Tourney. Eighteen of the toughest players around…well 17 players and me…suited up for the event. What a tough tourney this ended up being as those who won a token had to work real hard. This thing was nowhere near as soft as your usual token tourney…it was hard as ________.

Here were the people who made it through murderer’s row to earn their token (and a little cash for 6th place):

Thanks again to everyone who played last night, it was fun as always…join us next week for The Mookie – Lightning Strikes.

A couple of tourneys on tap for tonight…

And don’t forget about these two fine events coming soon…

  1. Mookie,
I’ve got mixed feelings on the 2nd Chance being a token race. When we got to five left, the question came up of whether we were playing ‘for real’ for ‘bragging rights’ or just pushing to be done with it since we had all already won tokens. There were mixed opinions (surprise, surprise!).
On the one hand, I understand the idea of “Hey, it’s just an 8 dollar tourney with a bunch of bloggers, it’s not like this is the WSOP. Who cares about bragging rights? Let’s just be done with this and go to bed.”
On the other hand, if that’s how it’s going to end, why bother playing this tourney at all? As it turned out we had exactly 18 players last night. If I wanted to just call it quits when we made the final 5, I could have played a plain old 18 player turbo token race. It would have been easier competition (ostensibly, at least, as I’ll give the blogging community credit for higher-than-average caliber play), taken less time (as several people pointed out in the chat), and even cost me a dime less in entry fee to boot.
I’m not asking for other people to ‘want to play’ that way. I just feel like this set up takes some of the good things that I like about these blogger tourneys out of play. I play these blogger events for a couple reasons: because they’re fun, but also because I want to beat people that I respect. Having this set up as a token race takes the incentive to outplay people out of the equation right when it matters most. (Of course, pushing blindly appears to be the only way I can win one, so maybe it’s not all bad. :-p)
Anyway, that’s my two cents. I’m not complaining, I had fun as usual, and if we stay with this format, I’m sure I’ll still be there to contribute next week. As always, thanks for taking the time to host.

  2. xkm – haven’t you had enough of playing with us all week? You actually want more? You are a sick, sick individual my friend. I’m just happy when the blogger events are finally done for the week and I can get on with my life! Ok ok, you know I’m just teasin, I like them for the same reasons you do.

He brings up a valid point, though personally I like the token race concept myself. Also, it makes for a shorter tournament which at that hour is good for East Coasters. (Or so I hear.)

Of course when you donk out of the Second Chance tourney in spectacular fashion as I always seem to, it doesn’t really matter what the prizes are, does it?

Either way, thanks again for hosting Mookie.

  3. Haha…ride the lightning…exactly what my avatar on stars is based on. The last song that is. No disrespect to H.P. Lovecraft btw.
Hope to see you at Al’s tourney.
