Fade The Mook

The weekend is here and there are plenty of good games on tap for us sports fans.  When it comes to betting sports I’m no MiamiDon.  I have no clue and am horrible at picking winners.  My only winner was a NFL 3-team parlay on an early Sunday morning at the Plaza sports book in Vegas three years ago.  So here’s your chance to fade me and make some cash…probably.

This week I’m gonna use 1,000 units for my picks spreading them over both college and NFL games.

Saturday

Michigan St. (+15 1/2) at Penn St. (-15 1/2) This line is huge and I hate betting against home favorites.  Penn St.’s offense has sucked over the last few weeks but Michigan St. has lost 10 straight games against ranked opponents.  I think Penn. St. wins the game but doesn’t cover.

Mook’s pick: Michigan St. (+15 1/2) 200 units

North Carolina St. (+11) at North Carolina (-11) Rivalry game between the in-state schools.  The Heels are coming off a tough loss to Maryland while State has won their last two.  With NC having problems settling on a QB and St. fighting to become bowl eligible I’m gonna take the points with NC St.

Mook’s pick: North Carolina St. (+11) 100 units

Texas Tech (+7) at Oklahoma (-7) Big, big game with national title implications.  This is just another tough matchup in the brutal Big 12 South.  If Tech can come through with another huge win, they’ll wrap up the south.  OU is something like 59-2 at home under Stoops and Leach has hasn’t won in Norman in his previous 4 trips there.  That being said Tech looks for real with a legitimate running game to go along with an improved defense.  As a Horn’s fan I’m hoping OU gets the win and since I’m run so poorly at sports bets I’m gonna try to jinx the Red Raiders and take the points.

Mook’s pick: Texas Tech (+7) 200 units

Sunday

Indy (+3) at San Diego (-3) The Chargers are 3-1 at home this year despite their overall 4-6 record.  Indy is 3-2 on the road and 6-4 overall.  Indy has won their last 3 games and during that stretch Peyton has looked much better with 7 TDs and no picks.  San Diego on the other hand is 1-2 over the last three games and the one win was a narrow escape against the crappy Chiefs.  Rivers has struggled a bit with 5 TDs/5INTs and LT hasn’t been putting up the kind of numbers we are used to seeing.  I’m going to take Indy and the points.

Mook’s pick: Indy (+3) 200 units

NY Giants (-3 1/2) at Arizona (+3 1/2) This will be an interesting matchup with the #2 passing offense going against the #2 passing defense.  The defending champs are 9-1 with the only loss being on the road against Cleveland.  Arizona is one of the surprises of the season and unbeaten at home so far.  With the Cardinals ranked 29th in rushing, I think the Giants have the edge if they are able to slow down the air assault.  I’m gonna go with New York here.

Mook’s pick: NYG (-3 1/2) 200 units

Tampa Bay (-8) at Detroit (+8) All signs and stats point to an easy win for Tampa Bay against the winless Lions.  Detroit has been competitive though in games against Carolina, Chigao, Washington and Houston over the last 5 games.  Since Tampa Bay hasn’t been blowing anybody out much this season so I’m going to make this my upset special.

Mook’s pick: Detroit (+8) 100 units

That’s all I have for this week’s Fade the Mook.  Time to place those bets and fade away.  Have a great weekend.

  1. What? not taking stand on the single greatest game in college football history. We got Washington(0-10) as a 6.5 favorite at Washington St.(1-10). Don’t often get a chance to take points and fade a team that’s 0 and 10. Two teams who apparently don’t know how to cheat.

    • Of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision (i.e., Division I-A) teams, Washington ranks 118th in total offense, 118th in scoring offense, 111th in total defense and 117th in scoring defense. Washington State ranks 119th in total offense, 119th in scoring offense, 113th in total defense and 119th in scoring defense. Washington is 117th in turnover margin, Washington State is last.

I know where I will be at Noon (PST)!

  2. Which of your picks does Waffles like? I’ll fade his picks.

  3. Wow, I can’t believe I missed the big Wash/Wash St. matchup. Screw the OU/Tech game, that one is definitely the game of the week. :)

Ha, I’ll get with Waffles and see about crossfading. I smell a prop bet.
